Phacoemulsification is a modern cataract surgery, where a cataractous lens could be emulsified through a small incision of 2-3 mm, giving perfect visual outcomes. An ultrasound probe is inserted through the incision. The probe emits ultrasound waves to break up the cloudy lens into tiny pieces. The emulsified lens material is suctioned out through the same probe.
An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted in the replacement of cataractous lens in the remaining lens capsule. Incision self-seals and requires no sutures. This procedure, also known as "Stitchless" cataract surgery.
